Brick calculation determines the number of bricks needed to cover a wall or paving area, accounting for mortar joint thickness and expected waste from cuts and breakage. Different brick sizes and patterns affect the count.

Standard modular brick: 7⅝" × 3⅝" × 2¼"
With 3/8" mortar: 8" × 4" × 2⅝" nominal

Wall bricks per sq ft ≈ 7 (single wythe, standard brick)

Pattern Affects Waste

Running bond (standard) wastes 5%. Herringbone wastes 10-15%. Diagonal or complex patterns can waste 20%+.

Openings Need Accounting

Windows and doors reduce brick count. But don't forget header bricks above openings and sill returns.

Using Wrong Bricks-per-Square-Foot
